Your service should be easy to recognize

A military uniform, a DD214, and a heartfelt “thank you for your service” all tell part of a story—but none belongs in your wallet for everyday errands. Fortunately, Veterans have several ways to prove their service without showing private discharge paperwork at every checkout. Some options are free and digital; others are printed on an ID you already carry.

The most useful approach is simple: choose one everyday proof of Veteran status, keep secure copies of your separation records for official applications, and use an online verification service for internet-only deals. A Veteran discount is not a VA entitlement; a business chooses whether and how to offer it.

Start here: Which Veteran ID should you get?

  • Everyday store or restaurant discounts: VA Veteran ID Card (VIC), Veteran-designated driver’s license, VHIC, or eligible DoD ID

  • VA medical appointments: Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)

  • Military base, commissary or exchange access: An eligible DoD ID, or qualifying VHIC/VA eligibility proof and installation approval

  • Online deals and special pricing: ID.me, SheerID, GOVX verification (merchant-specific; not government IDs)

  • Federal benefits or employment claims: DD214/accepted separation records, VA benefit letters, or program-specific eligibility evidence

Important: No single card guarantees entry, a discount, VA benefit eligibility, or transportation security screening. When in doubt, check the program’s own requirements.

1 | Get the free VA Veteran ID Card (VIC)

Best for: Veterans who want a simple digital photo ID for retail, hotel, and restaurant discounts—particularly if they are not enrolled in VA health care.

Eligibility: The VA says applicants may qualify after active-duty, Reserve, or National Guard service (including Coast Guard), with an honorable or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. Unknown or uncharacterized discharges need individual review.

How to apply:

  • Gather a digital copy of accepted separation records (such as DD214, DD256, DD257, PHS1867, or NGB22), a valid government photo ID, your Social Security number, and a square, current color headshot.

  • Open the official VA application page, choose “Apply for a Veteran ID Card,” sign in, and upload the requested documents. VA VIC application

  • Watch your email for approval or a request for more information. Approved cards arrive by email as digital photo IDs; new VICs have been digital-only since September 2022.

Cost: Free. Application help/replacement: vetidcard@va.gov. A VIC does not serve as airport identification, a federal-benefits credential, or permission to access a base, commissary, exchange, or VA hospital.

2 | Get a Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)

Best for: Veterans enrolled in VA health care. The VHIC is a physical photo card used for VA medical check-in, and many businesses accept it as proof for discounts.

How to obtain it:

  • Apply for VA health care if you are not already enrolled. Enrollment is required for a VHIC. Apply for VA health care

  • After enrollment, request the VHIC online or ask an enrollment coordinator at a VA medical center for help.

  • For an online request, prepare a current government-issued photo ID and a recent color photograph. Follow the VA’s specific photo/background standards. VHIC instructions

The VHIC is not health insurance, a payment method, or an automatic military-base pass. Certain service-connected Veterans and other qualifying groups may use additional commissary/exchange privileges, but access conditions are separate.

3 | Put “Veteran” on your state driver’s license or ID

Best for: Anyone who wants an everyday physical proof of service without carrying an additional card. The VA confirms that all 50 states and Puerto Rico offer a Veteran designation; requirements and fees vary by state.

  • Find your state motor-vehicle agency’s Veteran designation page.

  • Bring the documents it accepts—commonly your DD214 or another approved separation record. Some states require prior verification with a county or state Veterans office.

  • Request the designation when applying for or renewing your driver’s license or nondriver ID, and pay any applicable fee.

California example: Complete the driver’s license/ID application, visit a County Veterans Service Office to obtain Form VSD-001, and take that verified form to a DMV field office. The DMV collects the applicable application fee.

4 | Use an eligible Department of Defense ID

Best for: Military retirees and other people who are authorized to have DoD credentials. Depending on status, DoD issues a Common Access Card (CAC) or Uniformed Services ID (USID). Not every former service member qualifies.

Eligible personnel apply through a RAPIDS/DEERS ID card office, generally with a completed DD Form 1172-2 and identity documents. An eligible DoD ID may confirm military status and support installation privileges subject to security procedures and each facility’s rules.

5 | Keep an official service document or VA letter

For applications that need legal or benefits-grade proof, your DD214 is often the essential record; other discharge documents may apply to Reserve and Guard service. VA service-verification, benefit-summary, disability, or commissary-eligibility letters may also be useful where an organization explicitly accepts them.

  • Request military service records, including your DD214, from the National Archives. Most eligible Veterans and their next of kin can obtain free copies of non-archival service records. Request DD214

  • If the VA has generated eligible benefit or service-verification letters for you, sign in to VA.gov and download the one relevant to the application. Get VA letters

  • For certain more recent military records, the VA also directs Veterans to milConnect or the branch’s personnel command. Service records

Privacy tip: Do not hand a restaurant your unredacted DD214 unless absolutely necessary. It can disclose sensitive information; instead show a Veteran-designated ID or use the provider’s secure verification portal. Never upload military identity documents through an unsolicited link.

6 | Verify your service for online shopping

Online merchants may require a separate identity/status check even if you already carry a VA or state-issued Veteran ID. These commercial services are not substitutes for official credentials.

ID.me [ONLINE VERIFICATION] Create an account, confirm your identity/military affiliation, then use a participating merchant’s “Verify with ID.me” checkout link. Apple, Verizon, adidas and others use this process. Details

SheerID [ONLINE VERIFICATION] Complete the verification flow embedded in a participating retailer’s site; it may ask for a non-sensitive service document. Target and Foot Locker describe its use. Details

GOVX / GOVX ID [ONLINE VERIFICATION] Verify eligibility when prompted by a partner’s offer or shopping portal; check which service categories are accepted before making a purchase. Details

Do not assume one provider’s completed verification automatically works at another company. Keep your accounts secure with multifactor authentication.

A practical checklist: What to do today

  • If you do not have an everyday Veteran ID: apply for the free digital VA VIC or request your state Veteran designation.

  • If you receive VA health care: request a VHIC; you do not need a separate VIC just for many merchant discounts.

  • Store your DD214 securely, and request a replacement now if it is missing.

  • Set up ID.me once so online offers are easier to redeem.

  • Check both the merchant’s “military” terms and the date before planning around a special promotion.

Restaurant offers and Veterans Day: what to expect

Restaurants, coffee shops, local attractions, movie theaters, hardware stores and sports venues may offer Veteran pricing or special Veterans Day promotions. Many offers are location-operated, date-limited, require dine-in purchase, or are announced shortly before November 11. Because those terms vary significantly, we do not present unconfirmed restaurant discounts as guaranteed national policies.

For a useful annual routine, check a restaurant’s official promotions page during the week before Veterans Day, ask whether the offer applies to Veterans (not only active duty), and show your acceptable Veteran ID before ordering. The same approach works at locally owned restaurants and small businesses throughout the country.

For near-term promotions, Target has publicly described an early-November military promotion cycle, while individual SeaWorld locations run different seasonal Veteran ticket windows. Check each linked program for live dates before making travel plans.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need both a VIC and a VHIC?

Usually not for everyday discounts. If you have a VHIC or an eligible DoD ID or state Veteran designation, the VA says you generally do not need a second VA retail-discount card.

Can I use the digital VIC to board an airplane?

No. It is not an acceptable TSA travel identity document; bring a qualifying REAL ID license, passport, or other TSA-approved credential.

Does “Veteran” on my license let me onto a base?

No. Retail proof of military service and installation access eligibility are different. Contact the installation visitor center and bring the appropriate DoD/VHIC/VA proof when eligible.

I served in the Guard or Reserves. Do I qualify?

You may qualify for several forms of Veteran proof, but each program’s criteria vary by type of service, discharge, and any required active duty. The VA’s VIC rules specifically include qualifying National Guard and Reserve service.

What if my discharge paperwork is lost, or my status is uncertain?

Request a new service record through the National Archives or your service branch. If discharge character affects eligibility, the VA provides information about reviews and discharge upgrades. An accredited VSO representative can help with VA benefit claims without charging a fee.

Stay safe—and make the most of what you’ve earned

Use official .gov application websites and the merchant’s own published discount page. Avoid services that charge to obtain a free VA VIC or promise universal access based on a wallet card. Do not share the full DD214, Social Security number, military records or medical details with a cashier or unknown website.

The easiest combination for most Veterans is a Veteran-designated driver’s license or free VA VIC, plus a secure ID.me account for online purchases. Add a VHIC if enrolled in VA care, and keep official documentation for higher-value programs such as education, home loans and federal employment.
